Distracted

Jacob dreamt about a ladder. The ladder went from earth to heaven. But it wasn't Jacob who would use that ladder. Not in this dream. In the dream the ladder was crowded by angels. Angels ascended to heaven and angels descended again.

I have a different dream. A bad dream. I see a ladder reaching down from heaven. At its upper end is all the wisdom that humanity has gathered so far, plus all the wisdom we could gather. The written books and the books waiting to be written. But in my dream I am distracted. I get distracted by banalities, by all these digital tools for digital fools.

Even in my dream some people actually take the steps and walk up towards wisdom. Rung by rung, book by book. Yet me, I'm too distracted. “One could!”, I say, and “one should!” –  Then the next email demands my attention.
